Workforce Woes: Introduction

According to U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao (and our very own Recruiting Animal), we are dealing with a “workforce of brats”. Echoing the dismal problem that Jeff Hunter addresses in his brilliant numbered essays (start at 28 and work backwards), Chao does the standard Republican governmental thing and blames the workers for the labor shortage. Hunter, in the standard liberal twist, blames the government (the schools, that is). (Read The Article)

Understanding Financial Statements When Approaching Lenders

Financial statements are historical documents covering single time periods. Users of financial statements, however, are not so much concerned about the single time period as they are about the trends over time. Trend analysis is usually completed on key indicators, such as revenues, gross profit margin, operating expenses, and working capital components such as accounts receivable, accounts payable and inventory. Through comparison of ratios and trends a person can make informed judgments as to the significance of results. That is why banks or other investors often want 2 or more years of business results before they will lend.

Strategic Recruiting 2: Strategy

Much is made of the importance of strategy. In an organization, there are two manifestations. Being Strategic and Strategic Planning.

 The most important part of being strategic is being so well prepared that you are always on the proactive side of problem solving. There is nothing more strategic than a function which sets standards for anticipation. Evidence From The Telecommunications Equipment Manufacturing Industry

Investment in entrepreneurial ventures has gained popularity as a means for established firms to learn about new technologies and markets. However, the link between such Corporate Venture Capital (CVC) investments and innovation outcomes has not been examined in detail. Using panel data from corporate investors in telecommunications equipment manufacturing, we investigated the conditions under which CVC investments affect knowledge creation for corporate investors. We found that, when investor involvement is low, number of CVC investments has an inverted U-shaped relationship with innovation performance. However, when investor involvement is high, the relationship reverses, and an increase in investments boosts innovation.
